College History

Introduction to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences
College History
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Fo Guang University was established on August 1, 2025, through the merger of the former “College of Humanities” and the “College of Social Sciences.” Its origins can be traced back to the founding of Fo Guang University in 2000, with the establishment of the “Fo Guang College of Humanities and Social Sciences.” This college was the first institution of higher education created under Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s “One Million People Supporting Education” initiative, and it served as the prototype for the first university established by Fo Guang Shan in Taiwan. This founding background laid a solid academic foundation in the humanities and social sciences for Fo Guang University.

After the university was officially upgraded to Fo Guang University in 2006, the original College of Humanities and Social Sciences was divided into the College of Humanities and the College of Social Sciences. These two colleges continued to develop in areas such as Chinese literature, foreign languages, history, psychology, social work, and public affairs and governance.
In response to the trend of higher education consolidation and the integration of teaching resources, Fo Guang University began restructuring its colleges and departments in 2025, officially establishing the “College of Humanities and Social Sciences.” This reorganization symbolizes the university’s return to its founding vision and reaffirms its commitment to humanities and social sciences education.
